Welcome to The Twisted Oak Blog

Introduction

If you've found this blog, then you are probably aware that I have written a book about the creation of our home we call Twisted Oak. Many of the folks who have visited us since we’ve built and lived in our self-sustaining house have suggested that I write a book. Until recently, I never took the idea of writing about my journey very seriously. I certainly didn't foresee writing a blog.

Then, in the fall of 2016, we decided to open the house up to visitors during the 4Core Solar Home Tour, here in Durango. After touring the house and garden, groups of attendees began to congregate around the property. They were discussing self-sustaining homes, passive and active solar design, water catchment and alternatives to traditional septic systems. These people were asking intelligent questions, and their minds were open to possibilities. It was these discussions that inspired me to tell my story - not because I have all the answers, but because we need to engage in conversations that lead to action to change how we address our housing solutions.

I offer my journey as merely one example of how ordinary people can make radical changes in how we design and build our homes. We can reap the rewards of self-sufficiency, leave smaller footprints on the planet, and live less stressful and more abundant lives.

Let us begin that discussion with this Blog. If you would like to read more about self-sustaining homes and lifestyles, then stay tuned. I’ll be explaining more about how our house functions off of the power, water and sewer grid. I’ll give some reasons why I chose to build a self-sustaining home. I'll continue explaining more about the systems I talk about in the book: passive and active solar design, thermal mass and insulation, greywater, composting, water catchment, and much more.

The desire is to create a conversation that leads to actions. So, please let me know what you would like to read about and how I can help you on your journey to create a more environmentally responsible home.
